Lecturer or Senior Lecturer position in
Microbiology , ideally beginning
January 1, 2026 . We seek a dedicated educator with a strong interest in undergraduate microbiology instruction. Candidates with expertise in bacterial physiology and/or applied and environmental microbiology are especially encouraged to apply.
We value candidates who foster inclusive and engaging learning environments and who are committed to broadening participation in science both in the classroom and the broader community.
Position Responsibilities Primary responsibilities during the academic year will include teaching
in-person undergraduate courses with medium to large enrollments. These may include:
- Introductory Microbiology
- One to two additional courses aligned with the candidate's expertise
Additional responsibilities include:
- Designing and delivering effective course content
- Assessing student learning and providing constructive feedback
- Utilizing the Canvas learning management system
- Holding regular office hours to support student success
- Collaborating with colleagues to continuously improve the undergraduate experience
Opportunities may be available to teach in other areas, including:
- The online M.S. in Biological Sciences for Science Educators
- Summer courses (on-campus, online, or study abroad)
Lecturers are expected to participate in departmental service and engage in the broader academic life of the Department. The Department supports professional development and growth through the Lecturer promotion track (Lecturer → Senior Lecturer → Principal Lecturer).
Salary will be commensurate with education and experience and includes a comprehensive benefits package.
About the Department The Department of Biological Sciences, housed in the College of Science, spans the disciplines of:
- Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology
- Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology
We are a diverse community of ~55 full-time faculty (including ~22 lecturers), serving over 1,800 undergraduate majors in Biological Sciences and Microbiology and ~220 graduate students, including:
- M.S. and Ph.D. students in Biological Sciences, Microbiology, and Toxicology
- ~150 students enrolled in our online M.S. in Biological Sciences for Science Educators

Qualifications A Ph.D. in Microbiology or a closely related field is required at the time of appointment.
Ideal candidates will demonstrate:
- Excellence in teaching or assisting in university-level courses
- Strong communication skills, including science communication and outreach
- A commitment to inclusive teaching practices
